Saudi Arabia Pursues Cutting-Edge MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedo Technology

The United States has sanctioned a potential International Military Sale to Saudi Arabia, including MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes alongside essential logistical and programmatic assistance. This arrangement is estimated to be around $78.5 million, according to a recent announcement from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which briefed Congress regarding the proposed transaction on January 3, 2025.

Saudi Arabia’s request encompasses 20 completely assembled MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes (LWT), in conjunction with supplementary elements such as spare parts, recoverable exercise torpedoes (REXTORP), handling equipment, containers, training programs, manuals, and testing tools. The package also includes engineering, technical, and logistical support provided by both the U.S. government and its contractors.

This agreement aligns with U.S. foreign policy and national security goals by reinforcing a crucial regional ally that contributes to political stability and economic development within the Gulf. Upgrading Saudi Arabia’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities will enhance its capacity to confront current and forthcoming threats. The country is expected to effectively assimilate the new systems into its defense framework.

The arrangement will not disrupt the military balance in the area. RTX Integrated Defense Systems, based in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has been identified as the lead contractor, with no offset agreements anticipated. Additionally, the deal will require temporary visits from up to two representatives from the U.S. government or contractors for technical support and oversight.

The envisioned sale will not negatively influence U.S. military readiness. The projected total cost represents the upper limits, with final figures likely to be refined based on specific needs, funding availability, and finalized contracts.
