L3Harris Propels DoD’s Vision for Space Domain Insight
L3Harris Technologies has secured two agreements totaling up to $134 million to enhance elements of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) space situational awareness initiatives.
The Ground Based Optical Sensor System (GBOSS) and Space Fence Sustainment (Option Year 4) agreements bolster the U.S. Space Force’s Maintenance of Space Situational Awareness Integrated Capabilities (MOSSAIC) program.
“Progressing the MOSSAIC initiative will further modernize space situational awareness, which delivers essential data for multi-domain combat operations,” stated Ed Zoiss, President of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris. “For National Security Space leadership to effectively tackle threats, they must begin with a comprehensive understanding of the space landscape. L3Harris serves as a vital ally throughout the entire detection, tracking, targeting, and engagement continuum.”
With the GBOSS agreement, L3Harris will engineer and enhance technology to upgrade the current Ground-Based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance telescopes located at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico and Maui in Hawaii. This enhancement will bolster GBOSS resilience and enable more continuous coverage supporting space situational awareness across the DoD.
Space Fence represents a crucial element of the space situational awareness framework. The Space Fence sustainment initiative will facilitate the tracking of objects orbiting our planet, monitor space conditions, and evaluate foreign launches. L3Harris delivers cutting-edge space situational awareness capabilities to assist the warfighter in identifying and attributing potential hostile actions.
