  • Nexter, a subsidiary of KNDS, along with Safran Electronics & Defense, has been informed by the French Ministry of Defense’s acquisition and technology agency (DGA) about a contract concerning the upgrade of the optics for the refurbished Leclerc tank (Leclerc XLR).
  • The “observation” capability of the Leclerc XLR will be enhanced to the latest standards, particularly through the integration of the PASEO sight, to fulfill the stringent demands of contemporary combat scenarios.

The enhancement of a vital feature of the Leclerc tank

The temporary consortium (GME), which includes Nexter, a subsidiary of KNDS, and Safran Electronics & Defense, has been informed by the DGA regarding a contract aimed at the design and incorporation of advanced optics for the tank commander and gunner. These optics represent the primary observation and targeting systems of the Leclerc tank, enabling the crew to detect, identify, and engage a target several kilometers away prior to firing. These systems leverage cutting-edge optronic and inertial technologies, utilizing over 30 years of proficiency from Safran Electronics & Defense and the proven capabilities of the PASEO sight.

State-of-the-art digital optics

After technical discussions with the DGA team, Nexter and Safran Electronics & Defense are enhancing the “observation” capability considering the new threats present on the battlefield. The optronic core of the Leclerc tank’s weaponry is upgraded to digital technology to improve data transmission and deliver superior imaging under all conditions. The traditional analogue video system of the Leclerc tank is being upgraded to a digital video system. The gunner’s optics are being modernized with next-generation optronic sensors and updated electronics. Meanwhile, the commander’s optics will be replaced by an advanced PASEO sight, specifically designed for panoramic observation and engagement in diverse conditions. The PASEO series already offers these functionalities on the JAGUAR armored vehicle. For the commander’s eyepiece, OPT-Sys, a subsidiary of KNDS, supplies the digital monocular that acts as the connection between the tank commander and the PASEO sight.

A significant upgrade for the Leclerc XLR

Fitted with SCORPION vetronics, enhanced armor, a new remotely operated turret, and these advanced optics, the Leclerc XLR will be equipped to confront any threats until its successors are deployed. Production of these Leclerc XLR models began in early 2023, and all units will come with their upgraded optics by 2035.
