Rheinmetall Bolsters Its Fleet with Major New Truck Contract

Bundeswehr to Acquire 252 Unarmored Transport Vehicles under Framework Agreement

The German Bundeswehr has awarded Rheinmetall a contract for 252 unarmored transport vehicles with load capacities of five and fifteen tonnes. This agreement is a component of the framework established in 2017 for more than 2,200 advanced military trucks. The total value of this latest order is approximately €92 million, inclusive of VAT. Before the close of 2019, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH (RMMV) will manufacture and deliver the vehicles, which consist of 161 five-tonne trucks and 91 fifteen-tonne trucks. Production of this latest batch will commence immediately following the completion of the initial group of vehicles, set for delivery in the upcoming months as scheduled.

The framework contract finalized on 5 July 2017 with the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) encompasses a total of 2,271 unarmored transport vehicles from RMMV’s HX series and is valued at around €900 million (excluding VAT), which includes specialized tools and training services. An initial order for a batch of 558 vehicles was placed.

By participating in this extensive project, the Düsseldorf-based company, known for mobility and security solutions, is making a significant contribution to the modernization of the Bundeswehr’s large truck fleet, which consists of thousands of units. Primarily featuring components manufactured in Germany, such as engines, axles, gearboxes, and attachments, these vehicles will be assembled at the RMMV facility in Vienna.

Particularly in relation to multinational operations, the extensive global presence of RMMV vehicles presents notable advantages in terms of interoperability and logistics. Current users include military forces from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Denmark. Additionally, Norway and Sweden have made substantial purchases of trucks produced by RMMV.
