Naval Group Debuts Revolutionary MPLS Launcher at Euronaval

During the event of Euronaval 2024, Naval Group entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) alongside Thales and KNDS to collaborate on merging their innovations into the multipurpose and modular launching system (MPLS). This represents a significant technological advancement aimed at enhancing operational dominance, addressing diverse asymmetric and evolving threats. The MPLS facilitates the launch of multiple effectors, boasting exceptional payload capabilities and streamlined onboard integration.

A single launcher for diverse self-defense solutions

Departing from the “one launcher for each type of weapon” strategy, the MPLS signifies an entirely innovative system paradigm.

The MPLS incorporates interchangeable ammunition modules that can be customized to meet operational demands, offering a versatile array of effectors (rockets, missiles, grenades, underwater munitions, decoys, UAVs) to counter various threats efficiently. The ammunition carrying capacity has been enhanced, with a payload approaching 1,000 kilos. Moreover, a vessel can be equipped with one or several MPLS turrets, allowing for a combination of diverse weapon configurations.

Featuring a turret that can maneuver on two axes, including rotation and elevation, the MPLS is equipped with firing computers and a fire control system that enables precision strikes on moving targets. It can function independently or be connected to the combat system.

This advanced weapon system presents a fleet-centric approach, improving logistical support and crew training. It’s a solid assurance of financial benefits, alongside operational readiness.

A novel partnership framework

The MPLS not only introduces an innovative system concept but also a fresh partnership paradigm for product development and marketing. As the system is engineered to be suitable for various ammunition types based on operational user requirements, Naval Group collaborates with its partners to incorporate each ammunition module.

Thales contributes with its 70 and 68 mm rockets, along with Lightweight Multi-role Missiles (LMM), whereas KNDS provides its portfolio of creative ammunition. Collaboration has also commenced with MBDA to integrate Mistral and Akeron family missiles.
