Thales Unveils Cutting-Edge Avionics for Dassault Aviation’s Rafale Jets

Thales has secured the contract to provide Scorpion^® helmet-mounted sight and display systems along with digital multifunction displays for the entire fleet of Dassault Aviation Rafale aircraft in operation with the French Air and Space Force and the French Navy.

From surveillance missions to aerial defense and precision strike operations, the Rafale has played a pivotal role in the triumph of numerous military engagements. Nevertheless, future aircrews will need to process more information in shorter timeframes during combat operations executed in increasingly intricate settings. In conjunction with the aircraft’s armament systems, the Scorpion^® helmet-mounted sight and display amplifies tactical situational awareness and empowers crews to react swiftly and with enhanced agility to a wide array of threats. Its progressive integration into the Rafale F4 standard will be a vital asset in ensuring the effectiveness of airborne missions and safeguarding civilian populations.

The helmet-mounted display symbology consolidates data from the aircraft’s onboard sensors, assisting pilots in executing their tasks even in the most demanding environments. It establishes a seamless link between the cockpit and the external surroundings to significantly enhance awareness of the tactical scenario. Paired with the weapon system, the display can designate and monitor targets throughout the crew’s field of view in both daylight and nighttime conditions.

Scorpion^® brings forth all these capability advancements while maintaining the protective and durability features of a standard flight helmet. It has been optimized for weight and equilibrium to maximize pilot comfort and mission efficiency.

The 400 digital multifunction displays ordered will replace the lateral displays on France’s active Rafale aircraft, which are primarily utilized to inform the pilot about the status of the aircraft’s systems and deliver imagery from its onboard sensors. The new equipment features an expanded display area, an enhanced touchscreen interface, and superior processing capabilities.
