Leonardo’s Innovative Defense Solution Chosen for Government’s Premier Airbus Squadron

Leonardo’s aerial defense system has been chosen to protect an Airbus A330 earmarked for VIP transportation by a governmental entity. The configuration will be executed by Jet Aviation during the VIP modification of the aircraft at its MRO and finishing center.

The incorporation of Miysis DIRCM and MAIR enables the detection, tracking, and neutralization of various incoming missile threats simultaneously. This provides the aircraft with superior operational flexibility and, with Miysis DIRCM attaining a flawless success rate against all targets in live evaluations, the assurance that it can safeguard against both contemporary and legacy infrared missiles.

In comparison to other aerial defense solutions, Miysis DIRCM necessitates no upkeep once installed, thereby offering reduced lifecycle expenses. Furthermore, there are no ITAR restrictions on the defense technology, granting clients greater independence in how they elect to deploy their system.
Infrared missiles, such as Man Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS), pose a significant hazard to aviation, particularly when flying within or adjacent to conflict regions. Miysis DIRCM is entrusted to protect a diverse range of its clients’ most valuable assets, including those operated by the Royal Air Force and various NATO and Middle Eastern nations.

MAIR serves as a ‘distributed aperture’ threat detection system, consolidating data from infrared cameras positioned around the aircraft to simultaneously identify and trace incoming missiles by their thermal signatures, before transmitting them to Miysis DIRCM. Its robust laser is aimed at the missile’s seeker head, incapacitating it so that the missile cannot follow the safeguarded aircraft.

Compatible with all types of aircraft, Leonardo’s platform protection technology can be fitted on helicopters, wide-body airliners, and everything in between. It is compact and lightweight, and its discreet installation does not hinder aircraft performance or existing systems. Employing a unified platform protection system also offers benefits such as standardized training for operators and technicians, along with enhanced access to spare parts.
