Groundbreaking Homeland Defense Test by Missile Defense Agency Achieves New Milestone

In a groundbreaking demonstration by the Missile Defense Agency, an advanced SM-3® Block IIA ballistic missile interceptor, developed by Raytheon Missiles & Defense in collaboration with Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, successfully intercepted and destroyed an intercontinental ballistic missile target beyond the Earth’s atmosphere for the very first time.

“This unprecedented test showcases a strategic option for a new layer of defense against long-range threats,” stated Bryan Rosselli, Vice President of Strategic Missile Defense at Raytheon Missiles & Defense.

The SM-3 family of ballistic missile defense interceptors boasts a remarkable record, achieving more exo-atmospheric intercepts than all other missile systems combined. Notably, it is the only system of its kind deployed from both naval vessels and land installations.

Featuring Raytheon Intelligence & Space sensors, this landmark test involved tracking the target from low-Earth orbit. These sensors not only detected and monitored the target but also transmitted crucial data to decision-makers, demonstrating a significant advancement in space-based early warning systems.

Raytheon Technologies’ missile defense portfolio integrates cutting-edge sensors, effectors, command and control (C2) systems, and comprehensive integration work, providing the most advanced missile defense solutions for the U.S. and its allies today.
