Rheinmetall Secures Bundeswehr Contract for Innovative Airfield Fuel Trucks

Rheinmetall has secured a significant contract for specialized vehicles for the Bundeswehr. The German Armed Forces have partnered with the Düsseldorf-based technology conglomerate to provide a total of 48 fuel tank trucks for deployment at various German Army and Air Force airbases. Additionally, there exists an option for the acquisition of five more vehicles of this kind.

Finalized in June 2022, the contract is valued at a mid-two-digit million-euro sum. By acquiring this contract, Rheinmetall continues to bolster its robust connections with the Bundeswehr, particularly with the organization responsible for the support and upkeep of its vehicle fleet. Now, two years following the Bundeswehr’s order of 342 roll-off tippers from Rheinmetall, the range of utilization keeps broadening.

Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) successfully triumphed over competitors in a public tendering process. Deliveries will commence in July 2023; according to customer requirements, the final vehicles are set to ship before the close of 2024. The contract includes not only the vehicles but also the provision of fuelling components for the tank build-on as well as specialized tools. Moreover, a service agreement has been established for a twelve-year duration following the delivery phase.

Rheinmetall stands as one of the foremost manufacturers of military trucks of diverse types, boasting a vast range of special build-ons. The TGS 8×4 airfield fuel tank truck was crafted in close collaboration with Esterer GmbH & Co. KG of Helsa near Kassel, a distinguished producer of build-ons for tank trucks tailored for both civil and military applications.

Numerous attributes distinguish the vehicle, such as a remarkably high tank capacity of up to 22,000 liters, a state-of-the-art filter, and a digitized build-on that can be integrated with information systems. Comprehensive vehicle and spare parts documentation is accessible in digital format, supported by a global military service and assistance network.

This contract is pivotal for Rheinmetall not only because it strengthens the Group’s commercial ties with the Bundeswehr; it is also the inaugural instance in which it can exhibit – in collaboration with Esterer – its specialized proficiency in the domain of military tank trucks.

A segment of Rheinmetall’s Vehicle Systems division, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles acts as the Group’s center of excellence for specialized military and militarized logistical vehicles.

With its headquarters in Munich, the joint venture is partially co-owned by Rheinmetall AG, holding a 51% interest, and MAN Truck & Bus SE, which possesses a 49% stake. It stands among the world’s premier providers of defense solutions within the logistics land mobility sphere. Together with its predecessor companies, RMMV boasts a legacy exceeding a century of constructing trucks that adhere to the most stringent military specifications. All Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles are manufactured at the company’s facility in Liesing near Vienna.
