BAE Systems Cheers Historic Milestone in Tactical Launch of APKWS® Laser-Guided Munitions

BAE Systems successfully conducted test launches of its APKWS® laser-guided rockets using a tactical ground-based weapon system for the initial time. This proof-of-concept demonstration showcased the adaptability of APKWS rockets to deliver standoff precision strike capabilities for ground troops, offering military personnel a unique option for targeting with enhanced range compared to conventional firearms, thus reducing reliance on air support.

BAE Systems carried out the APKWS rocket evaluations at the U.S. Army’s Yuma Proving Ground, in partnership with the U.S. Navy and Arnold Defense, a prominent manufacturer of rocket launchers. The team utilized Arnold’s FLETCHER 2.75-inch/70mm Weapon System concept—a uniquely engineered laser-guided rocket launcher for ground vehicles—to effectively launch multiple rounds. This ground-launching capability extends hundreds of successful combat launches previously achieved from rotary and fixed-wing aircraft.

“Our clients appreciate the benefits of cost-effective, precision-strike capabilities that minimize the risks of collateral damage and seek the flexibility to implement them from their chosen platform,” commented Greg Procopio, director of Precision Guidance and Sensing Solutions at BAE Systems. “There is a growing demand for ground-to-ground precision munitions that allow a secure standoff distance for smaller ground units. We are working closely with our clients and collaborators to provide that functionality.”

Ground-launched APKWS rockets offer both mounted and dismounted units a strategic approach to engage soft and lightly armored targets across various platforms. The compact design, lightweight construction, and minimal power requirements of ground-launched APKWS rockets make them particularly effective for tactical light vehicles, remote weapon systems, non-standard tactical vehicles, and fixed positions, providing military personnel with precision munitions that enhance their safety and operational efficiency.

“We engineered FLETCHER specifically as a ground launcher for precision-guided 70mm rockets,” stated Jim Hager, president and CEO at Arnold Defense. “FLETCHER-launched APKWS rockets enable our military clients to target threats beyond just aerial platforms. We anticipate FLETCHER being utilized on an array of vehicles, from trucks and tracked units to maritime platforms in the future.”

APKWS laser-guided rockets constitute the exclusive U.S. government program of record for precision-guided 70-millimeter rockets. All four branches of the U.S. armed forces employ APKWS rockets, which are also available to U.S. allies through Foreign Military Sales. FMS programs support over a dozen partner nations, with additional interest from other countries.
