“Ascending to New Heights: Bayraktar KALKAN Soars in Turkey’s Defense Transformation”
The Turkish company Baykar has successfully completed tests on their newest drone, the Bayraktar KALKAN, designed for vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL).
This achievement signifies a significant advancement, allowing the drone to operate from diverse locations without needing a runway.
The KALKAN has concluded its 30th test flight, during which engineers gathered essential data regarding its systems. During this flight, it reached an altitude exceeding 14,500 feet and has accumulated a total of 70 flight hours to date.
The drone is equipped with an indigenous camera, the BG-160, crafted by Baykar, enabling it to obtain high-resolution images both day and night through advanced thermal imaging technology. This makes the KALKAN particularly suitable for reconnaissance and surveillance missions.
The KALKAN takes off vertically using electric motors before transitioning to a gasoline engine for extended operations. This hybrid technology allows it to stay airborne for over 7 hours.
Baykar has emerged as a leading figure in aerial technology within Turkey, exporting the majority of its products. Since 2003, they have reached significant milestones and were recognized as the leading supplier in defense and aerospace exports in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Their Bayraktar TB2 and AKINCI drones have successfully been delivered to a total of 34 nations.
