Naval Group Debuts UAE Navy’s Second Cutting-Edge Gowind® Corvette
On May 13, 2022, Al Emarat, the second Gowind® corvette commissioned by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from Naval Group, was launched in Lorient with the attendance of an official delegation from the UAE Navy.
In 2019, the United Arab Emirates contracted the construction of two Gowind® corvettes in France. The inaugural corvette, Bani Yas, made its debut in December 2021. The subsequent vessel, Al Emarat, was launched on May 13 at the Naval Group Lorient shipyard.
Naval Group, as a comprehensive solution provider, will also prepare the UAE Navy’s crew from the equipment stage to operational readiness. This training will initiate in France and proceed with team development and exercises on operational scenarios across various combat arenas in the Gulf region.
Stéphane Frémont, Director of Surface Ship Programs at Naval Group, stated: “The launch of Gowind® Al Emarat is a significant industrial and symbolic achievement, marking the corvette’s arrival in her operational domain. The two Bani Yas class vessels leverage the modular design of the Gowind® series, making them perfect assets for equipping the UAE Navy to tackle contemporary and future challenges with cutting-edge technologies.”
Gowind® has experienced notable commercial success with 12 units already sold. The majority are constructed locally through Transfer of Technology and collaborations with domestic industries, such as in Egypt, where three units are now active within the Egyptian Navy.
