The new manufacturing site in Várpalota represents a significant milestone in Rheinmetall’s expansion strategy. It underscores the company’s commitment to providing innovative technologies that enhance the defence capabilities of its allies. The facility is specifically designed to produce 30mm ammunition for the KF41 Lynx infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), which is scheduled to be produced in Zalaegerszeg and delivered to the Hungarian armed forces. Production at the Várpalota site is expected to begin in October 2024. Furthermore, munitions for battle tanks and artillery, along with igniters, will be included in the offerings manufactured in Várpalota during a subsequent phase. Ultimately, the site will encompass approximately 150 hectares as part of its final expansion.
In his opening address, Armin Papperger emphasized the importance of the new facility for Rheinmetall and the Hungarian initiatives: “The inauguration of this highly advanced ammunition plant in Várpalota is a clear testament to our dedication to innovation and outstanding quality. This establishment will not only strengthen the defence capabilities of our international partners and Hungary, but will also support the economic development of the region.”
In his comments, Hungarian Defence Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky underscored the strategic importance of the collaboration with Rheinmetall, highlighting the joint efforts in enhancing national security and the defence industry.
The newly established plant in Várpalota incorporates cutting-edge technology and will create over 200 employment opportunities in the locality, significantly boosting the regional economy. The production of the Lynx IFV and other variants further strengthens the progression of the Hungarian defence sector. Rheinmetall continues its legacy of enhancing global security through technological progress and strong partnerships.
