BAE Systems Unveils Featherweight LiteWave® Head-Up Display Revolution

BAE Systems has introduced an innovative, lightweight Head-Up Display (HUD) designed for both commercial and military aviation.

LiteWave is a compact, laptop-sized HUD mounted above the pilot’s head, providing essential data like direction, altitude, and speed directly in their sight line. At 70% smaller and lighter than conventional HUDs, LiteWave can be integrated into aircraft with even the most restricted cockpit configurations. Additionally, it can be installed up to 80% faster, and its streamlined design facilitates quicker and more cost-effective maintenance.

Leveraging BAE Systems’ groundbreaking, patented waveguide technology, LiteWave can be readily adjusted to accommodate any pilot’s seating position, ensuring optimal situational awareness, even in adverse weather conditions or nighttime operations.

“LiteWave can be integrated into nearly any cockpit globally,” remarked Lee Tomlinson, director of HUD products at BAE Systems’ Electronic Systems division.

“Our engineering team has developed a display that is smaller, lighter, and consumes less power than any existing Head-Up Display. It has the capability to transform the market and render HUD technology far more attainable.”

LiteWave signifies a pivotal advancement in delivering cutting-edge digital technology to the aviation sector and is now prepared for initial flight trials with prospective clients on both commercial and military aircraft.

Manufactured at BAE Systems’ Electronic Systems facility in Rochester, UK, this site has been at the forefront of cockpit display innovation and investment for over 60 years.

The Rochester facility has produced over 15,000 HUDs, which are actively used across more than 50 different types of aircraft in over 50 countries worldwide. This includes some of the most sophisticated military aircraft, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and F-22 Raptor.
