Galvion Unveils E.D.G™: The Cutting-Edge Solution for Headborne Power and Data Management

18 January 2024 – Galvion, a premier authority in power and data management solutions and cutting-edge head protection systems, is unveiling the E.D.G™ (Energy Data Grid; pronounced “edge”), a modular and scalable power and data distribution and management framework designed for headborne accessories. This launch coincides with Shot Show 2024 taking place in Las Vegas, USA, from 23-26 January 2024, where Galvion will showcase E.D.G alongside their other offerings at Booth 32003.

Galvion’s E.D.G headborne system has been crafted in response to the ongoing and intensifying power and data requirements of the warfighter. Developed over several years, the adaptable power solution was initially rolled out on Galvion’s PDxT™ helmet platform to fulfill the operational demands of the United States Marine Corps as part of the Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC) Integrated Helmet System (IHS) Other Transaction Agreement (OTA). Designed through a cyclical development approach, integrating real-time input from USMC trials throughout the journey, the E.D.G system signifies a pivotal advancement from a protective ‘helmet’ to an ‘integrated helmet system’ that boosts lethality and survivability. In response to similar operational necessities among various global clients and end-users, the E.D.G system will be accessible for Galvion’s flagship Batlskin Caiman® head system, and once launched for large-scale production, the versatile and scalable power solution can be retrofitted to an existing helmet or provided as a fully assembled helmet system.

The E.D.G system encompasses the Base Power Pack, powered by a single CR123 battery, and an additional Extended Power Pack that accommodates a minimum of two to six AA batteries, enhancing power availability and delivery when essential, yet removable to ease the burden when unnecessary. The system also includes a battery-powered strobe and VAS connection point, ready for emerging technologies like AR and VR. It features an independent task light and enhanced rails with integrated cable management and storage. An innovative aspect of this system is the state-of-charge indicators on the Extended Power Pack, also visible in the NVG display, ensuring operators are always informed of their available power resources.

Todd Stirtzinger, CEO at Galvion, stated: “We are deeply committed to equipping our military and tactical teams to tackle the continuously evolving technology and equipment requirements of the modern battlefield. We collaborate with tier 1 clients daily and recognize the challenges related to the proliferation of headborne accessories and capabilities. Managing their power and data requirements is a vital component of that. The E.D.G system embodies a collaborative effort across Galvion’s power & data, industrial design, human performance, and head systems teams to create a user-centric solution, and we’re thrilled to present this capability to our international customer base.” He added: “With an increasing number of our Caiman® helmets deployed in the field, this retrofittable power system offers an upgrade track for existing systems or is, naturally, available on a fully equipped new head system. We’re also excited about the potential to integrate E.D.G into our NSPA framework contract, allowing our multiple NATO clients easier access to this technology and capability.”
