Allies in Innovation: MBDA and PGZ Collaborate on CAMM-MR Project

MBDA and PGZ have finalized a collaboration agreement to develop a new CAMM medium-range, cost-effective interceptor at MSPO 2023 in Kielce. The CAMM-MR missile is engineered to fulfill the requirements of sophisticated terrestrial and naval air defense at medium distances.

The memorandum of understanding between PGZ and MBDA stems from the UK and Polish governments’ consent to advance the development of a future shared missile based on the Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) series as part of the UK–Poland 2030 strategic alliance.

The novel CAMM-MR missile concept has been conceived under a contract from the Polish Ministry of National Defense, with the missile designed to augment CAMM & CAMM-ER within the integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) frameworks of the MIECZNIK and PILICA+/NAREW/WISLA projects.

Eric Béranger, CEO of MBDA, emphasized: “This collaborative effort on a new missile marks a monumental milestone for our companies and for the progression of European defense solutions. MBDA was established to advocate cross-border development of missile systems in Europe, and we are immensely proud to collaborate with PGZ and Poland on this thrilling new initiative.”

Sebastian Chwałek, President of the Management Board of PGZ S.A., remarked: “This specific letter of intent is designed to outline the roadmap for future endeavors that both PGZ and MBDA should undertake to participate in the design, development, and production of CAMM-MR. We also label this project as Future Common Missile to express our ambition for it to serve both the Polish and British Armed Forces as a unified munition with dual production sources. This signifies a new era for PGZ, and we are highly motivated to engage, especially in design and development using the resources we currently have or are implementing, such as the HWIL Laboratory, as a robust and strategic partner of MBDA.”

Polish participation in the future evolution of the CAMM family follows the successful UK-Italian collaboration that produced CAMM-ER.

MBDA is actively working with PGZ to enhance Poland’s missile capabilities, including via the PILICA+, NAREW, MIECZNIK, and OTTOKAR BRZOZA programs, underpinned by the transfer of expertise and technology from MBDA to enhance Poland’s defense sector. This collaborative effort is delivering critical military capabilities to Poland, ensuring substantial value for investment and driving the Polish economy along with high-skilled employment opportunities.
