RTX Introduces Cutting-Edge LTAMDS Radar After Major U.S. Army Achievement
RTX has officially transitioned its Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) into production after receiving the U.S. Army’s Milestone C authorization, highlighting a significant stride in enhancing integrated air and missile defense capabilities.
Raytheon, a segment of RTX, designed LTAMDS to replace the outdated Patriot radar, introducing a cutting-edge system that offers extensive 360-degree threat identification. The system has successfully undergone eight complex flight evaluations and demonstrated its efficiency in real-world threat scenarios.
“This is an extraordinary milestone… transitioning from prototype to production and deployment at an accelerated pace,” remarked Tom Laliberty, President of Raytheon Land and Air Defense Systems.
Raytheon has delivered the initial six LTAMDS radars to the U.S. Army as part of a contract initiated in 2019. Present production is established at eight radars per annum, with plans to scale up to 12 per year to meet increasing demand. The impending deliveries, seven and eight, are expected later this year.
Poland emerges as the first international client to incorporate LTAMDS into its defense strategy. RTX has confirmed that 12 additional countries have requested pricing and availability information for prospective acquisition.
The system is designed to facilitate both national defense and expeditionary missions and was fast-tracked through U.S. Congress’ Middle-Tier Acquisition authority—an initiative that substantially shortened development timelines.
