“Australian Defense Force Chooses Safran’s Advanced JIM Compact Infrared Binoculars”

Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia Pty Ltd has finalized an agreement with NIOA* for the provision of over one hundred JIM Compact devices for the LAND 159 Tranche 1 – ADF sniper system – to enhance the capabilities of the Australian Defence Force.

The Safran JIM Compact multispectral surveillance tool, an essential component in military operations and real-time tactical intelligence, has been chosen to elevate sniper system observation, precision, and performance across diverse environments.

Weighing in at under two kilograms with the battery, the JIM Compact is distinguished by its portability, durability, battery life, and user-friendly design, tailored for both daylight and nighttime engagement operations. It features a cooled thermal sensor for extended ranges, an HD daytime channel, a laser rangefinder, sophisticated image processing, and the ability to transmit data and video to other sniper systems. Equipped with the “Long Range Sniper” (TELD) function, the JIM Compact notably enhances the likelihood of mission success, particularly against moving targets. TELD alleviates the cognitive burden of the operator by executing several calculations and enables swift engagement of a mobile target.

Patrice Provost, CEO of Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia, stated: “We are delighted to provide the JIM Compact binoculars to the Australian Defence Force. We appreciate the trust placed in us by NIOA following a rigorous tender process and look forward to ongoing collaboration with NIOA and the Australian Defence Force.”

With this agreement, Safran, a premier manufacturer of warfighter optronics equipment, expands the presence of the JIM Compact in Australia, with more than 250 units previously supplied to Australian Joint Fires Observers (JFOs), Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs), and Special Forces, as part of the LAND 17 Phase 2 contract.
