Thales Unveils Ground Master 400A: Elevating Skywatching for the Royal Malaysian Air Force
Thales announced on 8 December 2023 a contract for the provision of a GM400α long-range radar, complete with infrastructure, to the Royal Malaysian Air Force, witnessed by the Defence Ministers of both Malaysia and France.
This contract follows successful live demonstrations, showcasing the new GM400α radar’s capability to enhance aerial monitoring and defense functions. Featuring 5 times more computational power, an increased instrumented range exceeding 10% (515km), and cutting-edge artificial intelligence features, the radar delivers expansive air surveillance capabilities. Renowned globally for its technological excellence, the GM400α is utilized in over 20 nations, ensuring the Royal Malaysian Air Force elevated situational awareness.
In light of diverse and evolving threats, establishing a dependable, precise, and current Recognized Air Picture (RAP) is essential. The GM400α addresses the imperative to maintain airspace sovereignty, guaranteeing superior situational insight at all times.
Building on years of field-tested experience and leveraging GaN technology for surveillance, the GM400α detects various targets—ranging from fast jets and missiles to hovering helicopters and UAVs—operating close to the ground and concealed within radar clutter. Moreover, this radar provides unparalleled mobility and performance on the market. Thales will supply a comprehensive radar station, including a facility, access road, power supply, air conditioning, telecommunications, radome, and all related logistics.
“We are excited that Thales’ GM400α radar has been chosen by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) to serve as a crucial asset for Malaysia’s air defense and monitoring systems. This agreement is a robust affirmation of Thales’ prominence in the radar sector and signifies a new chapter in the ongoing success that began in 2009 when Malaysia became the inaugural customer of the previous radar model, the GM400,” said François-Xavier Boutes, Country Director, Malaysia, Thales.
This recent contract enhances the defense collaboration between France and Malaysia. With deep historical ties and a significant local presence, Thales is committed to fortifying Malaysia’s air sovereignty.
