Thales Unveils Ground Alerter 10: A Cutting-Edge Early Warning Shield for the German Armed Forces’ Camps and Convoys
Thales is delighted to reintroduce its extensive expertise and established systems proficiency to the German armed forces with the procurement of GA10 C-RAM systems. The finalization of this agreement stems from a request for proposals issued in late December 2020 by the German acquisition authority, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). Beyond training, documentation, and initial spare parts needs, this agreement incorporates an option for further system deliveries, with the inaugural handover scheduled for the end of 2021.
The Ground Alerter 10 is a mobile C-RAM system designed for Force Protection, successfully deployed in various operations, including convoy safeguarding and base security, having saved numerous lives in recent engagements. Its built-in alert network notifies military personnel of missile and mortar threats by emitting acoustic and visual signals at the anticipated impact zone. This alerting occurs as soon as the trajectory suggests an imminent strike within the designated safety perimeter, simultaneously supplying dependable data on the firing source at an early stage to support requisite countermeasures. Currently, multiple GA10 systems are operational in UN camps across North East and Eastern Mali, as well as being utilized by French forces in several external camps.
The GA10 is easy to set up, operate, and transport with minimal personnel, making it ideal for dismounted operations aimed at convoy protection. A team of two can handle en-camp/de-camp procedures, while only one operator is needed for system initiation and monitoring. Recognized as the lightest system in its category and clearly portable (requiring only 1 or 2 personnel loads), redeployment is feasible via protected vehicles or helicopters. Essential for mobile missions, the GA10’s prime power usage is just 350 Watts, enabling battery-operated functionality.
“We are extremely pleased to secure this contract, as it will greatly enhance the safety of German troops in their critical and hazardous out-of-area missions. Together with BAAINBw, we successfully managed to advance the project within just 2 months from tender award to contract finalization. Ground Alerter 10 is a European-engineered solution, with its final development occurring in Germany – a Military-Off-The-Shelf product – leveraging robust radar expertise and operational insights in Germany, produced at the Thales Germany Ditzingen facility, from Germany for Germany, so to speak,” stated Christophe Salomon, Executive Vice President Land & Air Systems, Thales.
