UAE Seeks Cutting-Edge AN/TPQ-50 Radars for Enhanced Defense Capabilities

The State Department has made a decision approving a potential Foreign Military Sale to the Government of the United Arab Emirates for AN/TPQ-50 Radar and related apparatus at an estimated expense of $85 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has delivered the necessary certification informing Congress of this potential sale today.

The Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has requested to acquire eighteen (18) AN/TPQ-50 Radar Systems – the portable variant. Also included are 107mm High Explosive (HE) rockets (for CONUS testing exclusively); Computer Digital Military Laptop Radar Control Display units; 5kW Advanced Medium Mobile Power Source (AMMPS) Trailer-Mounted, Diesel Engine Driven Power Unit PU-2001; spare parts; mission gear; communication and navigation devices; support materials; repair components; specialized tools and testing equipment; technical documentation and publications; site evaluation; U.S. Government and contractor technical and logistics personnel services; and other associated logistics and program support elements. The projected total cost is $85 million.

This proposed transaction will bolster the foreign policy and national security interests of the United States by enhancing the security of a key regional ally. The UAE is a crucial U.S. partner for political stability and economic advancement within the Middle East.

The proposed sale will assist in safeguarding essential infrastructure and high-value civilian assets, as well as military bases and forces from rocket, artillery, and mortar (RAM) as well as unmanned aerial system threats. It will also further strengthen the United States – UAE partnership, both politically and militarily, while increasing the UAE’s proficiency in carrying out military and civil defense operations that uphold U.S. national interests. The UAE intends to use the TPQ-50 radars to detect incoming threats from hostile countries or adversary agents. The United Arab Emirates will seamlessly integrate this equipment and services into its defense forces.

The proposed transfer of this gear and support will not disrupt the fundamental military equilibrium in the region.

The primary contractor will be SRC Inc, based in Syracuse, NY. There are no identifiable offset agreements associated with this prospective sale.

The execution of this proposed sale will not necessitate the permanent assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to the UAE. Temporary trips lasting two weeks for both U.S. Government and contractor personnel will be required to conduct Operator/Maintainer training, as well as System Integration & Check Out (SICO)/Quality Assurance and Testing (QUAT) activities.

There will be no negative effect on U.S. defense readiness as a consequence of this proposed sale.

The description and monetary value are for the maximum estimated quantity and amount based on preliminary needs. The actual dollar value will be lower depending on final requirements, budgetary authority, and signed sales agreements, if and when finalized.
