Poland Set to Bolster Armed Forces with Major $1.33 Billion AMRAAM Missile Acquisition from the U.S.
The United States Department of State has given the green light for Poland’s inquiry to secure RTX AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. This endorsement marks a crucial step in facilitating the sale under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) framework.
The documentation related to the anticipated transaction has now been submitted to the United States Congress for examination. If the process proceeds without hitches, the intergovernmental Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) could be formalized before the end of this year.
According to the Department of State, Poland seeks to procure 400 operational AIM-120D-3 missiles, along with a set of spare parts and a single missile designated for flight assessment. The proposed package also includes training, logistical assistance, and operational maintenance services provided by the United States.
The estimated cost of the complete package is up to $1.33 billion, although the final price will be settled through further intergovernmental negotiations. Should the acquisition be finalized, this will represent the next influx of AIM-120 series missiles to the Polish Air Force.
The missiles are intended to be deployed primarily on Poland’s Lockheed Martin F-16C/D “Jastrząb” and Lockheed Martin F-35A “Husarz” multirole fighter jets. The introduction of this sophisticated weaponry is expected to enhance the Polish Air Force’s capability in achieving air dominance over potential adversaries.
The AIM-120D-3 variant is distinguished by its ability to engage targets at ranges exceeding 150 kilometers from the launch point. In August of the previous year, Poland’s Armament Agency inked an intergovernmental contract for the acquisition of AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles, with deliveries expected between 2029 and 2033.
