“Celebrating Innovation: Mahindra ALAKRAN VMIMS Shines at Republic Day 2024 with a Touch of Indian Excellence”

The Indian Army presented the newest enhancement to its inventory, locally created under the ‘Made in India’ initiative by Mahindra and Milanion NTGS, the ALAKRAN Vehicle Mounted Infantry Mortar System (VMIMS), at the Nation’s 75th Republic Day celebration in New Delhi.

In partnership with Milanion NTGS, India’s Mahindra Defence has secured an initial contract to deliver an undisclosed number of units of the 81mm ALAKRAN VMIMS, mounted on Mahindra’s Armoured Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV).

The contract accord granted to Mahindra came after an earlier collaborative agreement between the two entities, aimed at exploring strategic avenues under the ‘Made in India’ initiative to manufacture, provide, and meet the demand for the VMIMS.

Delivery of the integrated systems is scheduled for the final quarter of 2024, significantly enhancing the mobility and indirect fire abilities of the vehicles to support the mechanised battalions of the Indian Army.

ALAKRAN VMIMS is a highly effective, combat-tested system that offers exceptional mobility, precision, speed, and formidable firepower on the battlefield. It is the globe’s lightest, entirely digital, automated mortar system, crafted from the foundation up for agile shoot-and-scoot combat operations.

A key attribute is its capacity to accurately fire eight rounds in under two minutes from a stationary position, enabling rapid deployment before enemy counter-battery fire can be effective. With automated aiming and re-aiming capabilities, ALAKRAN VMIMS delivers 81/120 mm mortar functionalities while channeling all recoil forces to the ground, addressing the operational challenges encountered by conventional mortar carriers.

The system is intuitive and can be readily integrated onto nearly any 4×4 vehicle with a minimum 2-ton payload, capable of adapting to varied terrains such as deserts, mud, snow, and forests, and is also heliborne-compatible due to its lightweight construction. Its robust architecture and resilient technologies render it a durable weapon proven to endure the rigors of combat and maintain operational effectiveness.

Milanion NTGS CEO, Julio Estrella remarked, “We are privileged that the Indian Army is presenting ALAKRAN VMIMS at such a notable event for the nation and are eager to further our longstanding commitment to the Indian Defence sector through the ‘Made in India’ initiative.”
