French Navy Elevates Surveillance with Safran’s Cutting-Edge EuroflirTM 410 for H160 Helicopters

Babcock France has partnered with Safran Electronics & Defense to integrate the cutting-edge Euroflir™410 optronic (electro-optical) system into four H160 helicopters. This collaboration, sanctioned by the French defense procurement agency DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement), aims to enhance the capabilities of the French Navy over a ten-year contract.

These four H160 rotorcraft, developed by Airbus Helicopters, will complement an interim fleet that includes a dozen Dauphin N3 helicopters fitted with the advanced Euroflir™410 system. Babcock will modify the H160s to align with the evolving operational requirements of the French Navy. Feedback gathered from naval operations will also inform the design of the H160’s military variant, known as Guépard (“Leopard”).

The Euroflir™410 NG system is adept at detecting details such as a ship’s registration number or an individual in distress from several kilometers away. This advanced technology significantly enhances the French Navy’s operational capabilities, allowing for effective at-sea Search & Rescue (SAR) missions launched from bases in Brittany (Lanvéoc-Poulmic) and along the English Channel (Cherbourg). The Euroflir™410 ensures unparalleled observation under various visibility conditions, thanks to its long-range multispectral telescope and high-performance line-of-sight stabilization. Equipped with a high-definition video camera (HDTV) and a medium-wave infrared (MWIR) imager, its multispectral architecture also includes specialized cameras tailored for challenging maritime environments, such as near-infrared and shortwave infrared models.

This recent contract solidifies Safran’s position as a leader in the competitive market for onboard optronics in Europe. Designed and manufactured in France, the Euroflir™410 system emphasizes innovation and reliability. The initial deliveries of H160 helicopters equipped with the Euroflir™410 are expected in 2022. In addition to the optronic systems, Safran also supplies Arrano turboshaft engines for the H160, along with other essential components.
