Fincantieri Unveils Seventh PPA Vessel “Domenico Millelire” at Riva Trigoso Ceremony

Today marked the unveiling of the seventh PPA (Multipurpose Combat Ship) “Domenico Millelire” at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Riva Trigoso (Genova).

The event was graced by notable attendees including Vice Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, alongside Massimo Scialpi, Deputy Director of OCCAR, and was hosted for Fincantieri by Dario Deste, General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division. The ceremony’s godmother was Ms. Franca Millelire, a descendant of Domenico Millelire.

This vessel is a component of the revitalization strategy for the operational capabilities of Italian Navy vessels, endorsed by both the Government and Parliament under the auspices of OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Cooperation sur l’Armement, the international body for collaboration in military equipment).

Specifications of the PPA:

The PPA is an exceptionally versatile vessel, capable of fulfilling various roles, from maritime patrol and rescue operations to Civil Protection missions, and in its most advanced version, functioning as a frontline combat ship. There will indeed be diverse configurations of combat systems: commencing from a “soft” version intended for patrol duties, augmented for self-defense capabilities, to a “full” variant, equipped for comprehensive defense operations. The vessel also has the ability to operate high-speed crafts such as RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) up to 11 meters long via lateral cranes or a hauling ramp situated at the extreme stern.

  • Velocity exceeding 31 knots
  • Accommodates a crew of 171 personnel
  • Fitted with a combined diesel and gas turbine plant (CODAG) along with an electric propulsion system
  • Capability to deliver potable water to shore

The PPA vessels are being constructed at the Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, with delivery anticipated until 2026.
