The U.S. Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center alongside Patria has finalized a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) aimed at evaluating the practicality of integrating a turret-mounted, breech-loaded 120 mm mortar weapon system within U.S. mortar carriers. This agreement intends to examine the functionalities of the Patria Nemo mortar system, its synergy with U.S. mortar carrier weapon platforms and fire control systems, as well as to assess the applicability of existing U.S. 120 mm mortar ammunition in a breech-loaded mortar, like the Patria Nemo.

This partnership is a continuation of the U.S. Army’s initiative to provide Armored and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams with swift, precise indirect and direct fire capabilities while ensuring the crew’s safety and substantially alleviating their physical workload. In late 2018, the Army issued a market inquiry to identify competent sources for the development and manufacturing of the 120 mm Mortar Future Indirect Fire Turret (FIFT). Patria responded to this market inquiry utilizing the Patria Nemo mortar system.

Patria Nemo is a turret-mounted, remote-operated 120 mm mortar system capable of both direct and indirect fire, executing up to 6 rounds in simultaneous impact fire missions. Alongside its high protection levels, Patria Nemo is lightweight, compact, and can be effortlessly mounted on light, tracked chassis, wheeled armored vehicles, or naval vessels.

“The collaboration between the U.S. Army and Patria demonstrates the transformative capabilities that contemporary turreted mortar systems can introduce to military forces and highlights Patria’s pioneering role in this technological domain. It also represents a logical extension of the cooperation between Patria and the U.S. Government, initiated by the Patria Nemo sales to a third nation through a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program,” states Jussi Järvinen, President of Patria’s Land Business Unit.

U.S. Foreign Military Sales constitute a type of security assistance that permits the U.S. to sell defense items and services to international partners.
