Fincantieri Secures Major Deal to Deliver Two PPAs to Indonesia

Fincantieri along with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence have formalized a contract worth 1.18 billion euros, as part of the collaborative initiatives initiated by the Italian Ministry of Defence, aimed at delivering two PPA Units. The PPA is a remarkably versatile vessel featuring exceptional technological capabilities. It is designed to fulfill a variety of roles, spanning from patrol missions with rescue capabilities to Civil Protection efforts and frontline combat operations.

The agreement was endorsed by Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, and witnessed by Dario Deste, General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division.

The ships included in the order – initially intended for the Italian Navy – are presently under construction and outfitting at the Integrated Shipyard located in Riva Trigoso-Muggiano.

The Indonesian Ministry of Defence’s interest in the PPA Units is motivated by the Maritime Campaign in the Far East of the Francesco Morosini, the second vessel of the Italian Navy’s PPA class, which made a port call in Indonesia in July 2023. This agreement has the potential to create further synergies in operational, industrial, and technological domains between both nations. The Units will be poised to assist Indonesia in safeguarding national interests and enhancing stability within the critical Indo-Pacific region.

In this collaboration, Fincantieri will serve as the primary contractor for the Indonesian Ministry of Defence and specifically manage other industrial collaborators, including Leonardo, for the modification of the vessels’ combat systems and provision of associated logistical support. The entities will establish pertinent agreements in accordance with prevailing regulations, including those pertaining to transactions between affiliated parties.

The validity of the contract is reliant on acquiring the necessary approvals from the appropriate authorities.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, stated: “This contract represents a pivotal moment for the advancement of a strategic alliance between our organization and Indonesia. We perceive this as the inception of numerous significant collaborative ventures with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, bolstered by a long-term partnership strategy supported by our institutions, including the Ministry of Defence and the Italian Navy. Southeast Asia is an area of paramount geopolitical significance where Fincantieri aims to amplify its influence, as outlined in the Business Plan.”
