BAE Systems Set to Revolutionize UAE’s Next-Gen F-16s with Advanced Flight Control Systems

BAE Systems Selected by Lockheed Martin for F-16 Flight Control Upgrade in the UAE

In a significant advancement for military aviation, BAE Systems has been appointed by Lockheed Martin to enhance the flight control capabilities of next-generation F-16 aircraft designated for the United Arab Emirates.

BAE Systems will supply its innovative Digital Flight Control Computer for the F-16s. This state-of-the-art system processes demand inputs from the pilots’ control stick and rudder pedals while continuously monitoring flight conditions using on-board sensors. It quickly computes and sends commands to various actuators, including rudders, stabilizers, and spoilers, ensuring smooth and controlled flight operations.

Corin Beck, Director of Military Aircraft Systems at BAE Systems, stated, “Our high-integrity controls empower pilots with next-level advanced technology. We are committed to introducing groundbreaking features to the F-16, such as the computing platform for the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System, alongside this cutting-edge digital fly-by-wire flight control computer.”

The initial contract with Lockheed Martin encompasses a variety of services, including design, qualification, integration, flight testing, and certification for the flight control system. Production orders for approximately 100 units are anticipated for 2020 and 2021, potentially bringing the total up to 315 units by 2028. Future orders for additional upgrades and new builds of the F-16s may also be considered within this agreement.

All developmental and production activities related to this contract will be carried out at BAE Systems’ facility in Endicott, New York.

As a renowned leader in the design and production of highly reliable flight control systems for both commercial and military aircraft, BAE Systems pioneered the concept of fly-by-wire technology in military and civil aviation. The company’s relentless pursuit of innovation continues through the development of high-integrity control systems, not only for the F-16 Block 40, 50, 60, and 70 series but also featuring the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance Systems for Block 30 F-16s. Furthermore, BAE Systems supplies the quad-redundant side stick pilot controller found in all configurations of the F-16 aircraft.
