The initial unit from a sequence of three ASD TUGs 2810 Hybrid was escorted into the Den Helder harbour by the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) on February 20th. This hybrid tug, named Noordzee, measures nearly 29 meters in length and represents the first standard hybrid tug provided by Damen that the RNLN will utilize.

The agreement for the trio of ASD tugs highlights the strong collaborative relationship that exists between Damen and the RNLN, alongside their mutual vision. Both entities advocate for a sustainable future and have opted for the eco-friendly ASD TUG 2810 Hybrid.

Currently, the RNLN has four traditional tugs stationed in Den Helder. However, these aging vessels lack the necessary power to tow contemporary ships such as the HNLMS Karel Doorman, HNLMS Rotterdam, and the HNLMS Johan de Witt. Moreover, the older vessels still employ standard propellers with rudders that limit manoeuvrability and no longer align with the RNLN’s sustainability vision for the future.

The advanced ASD TUG 2810 Hybrid is among Damen’s standard tugs and features a hybrid propulsion system that is robust yet eco-conscious. The vessel is equipped with two rudder propeller units for optimal manoeuvrability and can operate entirely on electric power via a battery system, as well as diesel-electric mode through the generator. When maximum power is needed, both main diesel engines are engaged, enabling a peak bollard pull of 60 tonnes, ensuring all heavy-duty towing tasks can be accomplished.

The RNLN specifically sought a standard tug that is exceptionally environmentally friendly while still being powerful enough for demanding operations. The Navy selected Damen for the project because hybrid technology and sustainability are integral design principles for Damen. In total, the RNLN, in partnership with the Swedish Navy, has commissioned five vessels, including the hybrid tugs. The two additional Swedish vessels also follow a standard design but are tailored for operations in icy waters.

The Noordzee was transferred by the RNLN from Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania to the port of Den Helder. The other two vessels, the Waddenzee and the Zuiderzee, are expected to be delivered by mid-March and mid-June, respectively. Damen is proud to collaborate with the RNLN in a partnership that underscores their commitment to sustainability and the diverse goals of both organizations.
