Fincantieri Unveils Qatar’s Third Sleek Corvette Masterpiece
The formal introduction of “Al Khor,” the third vessel from the Al Zubarah class corvette series commissioned to Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defence as part of the national naval procurement initiative, occurred today at the Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard. The ship is slated for handover in 2022.
The event, conducted in a limited capacity and in strict adherence to safety protocols against contagion, saw the presence of Staff Brigadier General Abdulla Ali Al-Mazroey, Deputy Commander of the Qatar Emiri Navy and Head of the Qatar Emiri Navy Flotilla, Vice Admiral Giorgio Lazio, the Italian Navy Maritime Commander – Area North, alongside Marco Acca, Deputy General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division at Fincantieri.
The Al Zubarah class corvettes, engineered in alignment with the RINAMIL standards, are designed to be extremely versatile and are capable of executing a wide array of tasks, ranging from surveillance missions with maritime rescue capabilities to serving as combat vessels. These ships will measure approximately 107 meters in length and 14.70 meters in width, boasting a combined diesel and diesel propulsion system (CODAD), and achieving a top speed of 28 knots. Each unit will have the capacity to accommodate 112 crew members on board.
Moreover, these corvettes will have the ability to deploy high-speed crafts, such as RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat), via side cranes or a retrieval ramp situated at the stern. The flight deck and hangar are adequately sized to accommodate one NH90 helicopter.
