“Shielding the Future: MBDA Sea Ceptor Defends the Royal Navy’s Type 31 Frigates”
MBDA’s Sea Ceptor system is set to safeguard the Royal Navy’s new Type 31 frigates through a contract granted by the UK Ministry of Defence.
Sea Ceptor is recognized as the most advanced naval aerial defense system in its category globally. Employing the Common Anti-Air Modular Missile (CAMM), it provides both leading-edge close-range air defense and local-area air protection. This state-of-the-art system will enable the Type 31 to simultaneously shield itself and adjacent vessels from threats currently in existence or anticipated in the future, such as high-speed maneuvering munitions, assault aircraft, and rapid inshore attack craft.

The new agreement encompasses the integration of Sea Ceptor with the systems aboard Type 31, alongside the provision and installation of naval hardware essential for the Type 31 initiative. Conceptualized and manufactured in the UK, this contract is a segment of the Portfolio Management Agreement (PMA), a collaboration that was established in 2010 between the UK MoD and MBDA focusing on sovereign complex armament design and fabrication. The PMA supplies exceptional military gear for the UK Armed Forces and has assured over 4,000 positions at MBDA UK while generating savings exceeding £1.2 billion.
Sea Ceptor is currently operational on the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates and will also provide defense for the upcoming Type 26 frigates. The UK Ministry of Defence upholds a unified stockpile of CAMM missiles for both the Royal Navy and the British Army. The CAMM missile series has been adopted by an expanding array of other nations for both naval and terrestrial aerial defense solutions.
