The Swedish administration has granted BAE Systems a contract on the 30th of March to renovate 262 Combat Vehicles 90 (CV90) for the Swedish Armed Forces.

The organization’s tasks will encompass restoring the chassis and enhancing the vehicles’ durability and turrets while also improving combat system efficacy. Collectively, these initiatives will aid in prolonging the lifespan of the vehicles, thereby bolstering Army capabilities.

“This is a highly significant initiative for BAE Systems and the Swedish Armed Forces,” stated Lena Gillström, managing director of BAE Systems Weapons Systems in Karlskoga, the facility responsible for turret production. “With this upgrade and the integration of the new Battlefield Management System, these vehicles will enter the domain of digital defense, fortifying the Army’s ability to address future challenges.”

BAE Systems aims to collaborate closely with the client throughout the entire program. The work commences immediately with deliveries starting in 2018 and continuing until 2020.

“For the Swedish Armed Forces, CV90 has demonstrated its worth and capability over the years,” commented Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, president of BAE Systems Hägglunds AB in Örnsköldsvik. “CV90 is already operational in seven nations, and now, with this refurbishment initiative, we will further enhance the CV90’s role in Sweden’s defense.”

CV90 is a series of Swedish tracked combat vehicles developed by FMV, BAE Systems Hägglunds, and BAE Systems Weapons Systems, with over 4 million engineering hours invested in the advancement of this sophisticated Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV). The Swedish variant of the IFV features a turret armed with a 40 mm autocannon.

The Swedish Armed Forces operate a fleet of 509 CV90s. Other nations presently employing this vehicle include Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

The contract was conferred to HB Utveckling AB, a partnership between BAE Systems Bofors AB, part of BAE Systems Weapons Systems, and BAE Systems Hägglunds AB.
