Navigating Innovation: Thales Enhances Greek Navy’s Frigate Fleet

Thales is pleased to acknowledge Greece’s commitment to procure the Belh@rra® export variant of Naval Group’s FDI defense and intervention frigate for the Hellenic Armed Forces. A confirmed order for three frigates, with an additional option for another, has been executed by the Greek authorities.

Engineered to fulfill a diverse array of naval operations and to adapt to emerging technologies and shifts in the operational landscape, Greece’s Belh@rra® frigates will be outfitted with an extensive suite of primary sensors developed by Thales, seamlessly integrated with the vessel’s combat system.

Thales will deliver its Sea Fire radar, a completely solid-state multifunction radar featuring a fixed, four-panel antenna that conducts simultaneous long-range air and surface observation alongside guidance for air defense missiles. This marks the first export achievement for the Sea Fire radar, engineered to provide exceptional performance in intense combat scenarios. Furthermore, the frigates will include an IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) system and fire control radar.

Moreover, Greece’s FDI frigates will leverage a comprehensive Thales sonar suite, which includes the Kingklip MK2 hull-mounted sonar and the Captas-4 Compact towed-array sonar, in addition to a digital electronic warfare suite and an extensive variety of integrated naval communication systems. This will ensure interoperability and flawless connectivity for the frigates and their personnel.

The agreement will support employment at Thales’s manufacturing facilities, particularly across France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Greece.

“Thales expresses gratitude to the Greek authorities for the confidence they have demonstrated in our cutting-edge naval solutions. This new agreement further fortifies the strategic partnership between Greece and France,” stated Patrice Caine, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Thales.
