Raytheon Lands $235 Million Deal with U.S. Navy for Next-Gen Standard Missile-6 Manufacturing
The U.S. Navy has allocated $235 million to Raytheon Company for the manufacture of Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) all-up round missiles and spare components as of January 23rd.
Raytheon is slated to initiate deliveries in 2018. These missiles will be deployed on Aegis cruisers and destroyers to enhance operations for the U.S. Navy fleet. This award represents the fourth consecutive year of full-scale production for the adaptable missile, which has recently reached significant testing achievements.
The contracted missiles will include an anti-surface capability, confirmed in early 2016 during a notably successful tactical demonstration near the shores of Kauai. The SM-6 also set a new record for maximum down-range and cross-range intercepts in over-the-horizon missions. This demonstration of operational capability has established the SM-6 as a versatile missile with improved functionalities in Anti-Air Warfare, Sea-Based Terminal, and Anti-Surface Warfare.
“The SM-6 encompasses three distinct missions, making it the most economical missile for each defended area and threat scenario,” remarked Mike Campisi, senior program director for Standard Missile-6. “The effectiveness of the SM-6 continues to surpass expectations and extend beyond its initial mission.”
The final assembly of the SM-6 is conducted at Raytheon’s state-of-the-art production facility located at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.
About the Standard Missile-6
The SM-6 offers a reliable, over-the-horizon defensive and offensive capacity, utilizing the enduring benefits of the Standard Missile airframe and propulsion system, coupled with active radar systems from the Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile.
The SM-6 uses both active and semi-active radar modes along with advanced fuzing techniques.
It incorporates sophisticated signal processing and guidance control systems derived from Raytheon’s Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile.
First deployed in 2013, the SM-6 has seen Raytheon deliver approximately 250 missiles to various branches of the military.
