Lithuania Elevates Defense Strategy with Cutting-Edge Mobile Air Shield Deal from Saab

Saab has secured an additional agreement from Lithuania for the Mobile Short-Range Air Defense (MSHORAD) solution. The deal is valued at SEK 1.2 billion, with deliveries expected from 2026-2029.

Saab announced the initial MSHORAD contract from Lithuania in July 2024. This supplementary agreement will enable a second battery in the Lithuanian military to benefit from Saab’s mobile aerial defense capabilities.

“We are thrilled to further support the Lithuanian Armed Forces in enhancing their short-range aerial defense capabilities. MSHORAD is a highly mobile solution that enables the operator to quickly and effectively identify and neutralize airborne threats,” states Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s Dynamics business area.

“The acquisition of the Mobile Short-Range Air Defense System (MSHORAD) will enhance the Lithuanian military’s ability to respond to potential enemy air attacks. The system’s mobility is its primary advantage, rendering it an essential asset for Lithuania,” remarked Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Laurynas Kasciunas.

The order includes Mobile Firing Units, Mobile Radar Units, and a Command and Control (C2) system. Saab will incorporate MSHORAD into JLTV vehicles manufactured by the U.S. company Oshkosh before the final delivery to the client.

MSHORAD represents Saab’s advanced mobile aerial defense system. It comprises the Mobile Radar Unit equipped with the Giraffe 1X radar and the Mobile Firing Unit based on the RBS 70 NG, all interconnected through GBAD C2, which serves as Saab’s command and control framework for ground-based aerial defense.
