Thales Unveils Revolutionary XTRAIM Dual-Mode Optics for Military Use
Thales has introduced XTRAIM, an innovative weapon sight featuring day/night decamouflage functionalities that were previously achievable only through multiple distinct pieces of equipment. It is compatible with all shoulder-fired assault rifles (HK416) and light machine guns (Minimi), granting users unparalleled accuracy for night firing. XTRAIM was crafted in close partnership with users to ensure that its ergonomic design and features align with their specific operational needs.
The XTRAIM sight delivers a crucial operational edge in both conventional and unconventional combat scenarios.
The latest sight weighs approximately 530 g (including battery) and is at least 70 mm shorter compared to alternative options. It serves as the ideal companion for dismounted combatants, alleviating the burden on soldiers while enhancing their agility and stamina.
XTRAIM is a fully integrated sight for daylight missions, merging a reflex red-dot sight with thermal imaging technology to distinguish targets against the background (decamouflage feature). The exceptional brightness of the reticle in the red-dot sight facilitates target identification and engagement even under bright sunlight.
For nocturnal missions, XTRAIM is compatible with all varieties of night vision goggles. In this setup, the infrared visuals from the weapon sight are layered over the images from the light-intensification tubes in the goggles, providing an unparalleled target decamouflage capability in dim-light environments.
This state-of-the-art weapon sight broadens the dismounted soldier’s view of the battlefield, allowing users to identify threats with high precision, thereby enhancing mission effectiveness and improving user safety. The ergonomic structure of the XTRAIM sight permits users to fire with both eyes open, day or night, while maintaining full awareness of their surroundings. The range capabilities of this innovative product are in complete harmony with the effective ranges of the dismounted soldier’s weaponry.
The XTRAIM sight was developed at Thales’ center of excellence for dismounted soldier optronics in Saint-Héand and is completely assembled at this location in Eastern France. French enterprises have played a pivotal role in the development of this advanced solution, including LYNRED, the supplier of the infrared sensors.
“The exceptional optical, electronic, and mechanical expertise of the teams from Saint-Héand, Thales’ global hub for soldier optronics, has enabled us to design and create a solution in collaboration with our clients, for our clients, that provides the finest operational capabilities available today. XTRAIM is truly a game-changer for the military,” stated Christophe Salomon, Executive Vice President, Land and Air Systems, Thales.
