“Strategic Talks: Tunisian and American Defense Teams Explore Collaborative Opportunities”

The U.S.-Tunisia Joint Military Commission Senior Leader Forum (JMC SLF) took place in Tunis, Tunisia on October 6-7, 2020. Dr. Michael Cutrone, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, spearheaded the U.S. contingent by participating virtually, while Minister Brahim Bertegi, the Tunisian Minister of Defense, commanded the Tunisian side. U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia, Donald Blome, contributed from Tunis.

Following his visit to Tunis with U.S. Secretary of Defense Dr. Mark T. Esper on September 30, 2020, during the JMC SLF, Dr. Cutrone emphasized the U.S. dedication to Tunisia as a pivotal ally in Africa. Dr. Cutrone and Minister Bertegi encouraged both delegations to refine a Bilateral Country Action Plan, which is an essential step to actualize the U.S.-Tunisia Roadmap for Defense Cooperation established during the Secretary’s visit.

Dr. Cutrone and Minister Bertegi reiterated the strategic benefits of the bilateral alliance, showcasing the shared advantages that this cooperation presents. They assessed their initiatives to enhance the Tunisian military’s capability to safeguard its borders, execute joint missions, conduct effective counter-terrorism operations, and manage crises. The two delegations also deliberated on avenues to expand defense collaboration further as a strategy to bolster regional stability and safety.

Dr. Cutrone and Minister Bertegi recognized the robust, enduring security collaboration founded on trust, democratic principles, and respect for sovereignty, expressing optimism for a deeper partnership in the forthcoming years.
