Malaysia and UAE Forge New Path in AI Partnership with Groundbreaking MoU

The United Arab Emirates and Malaysia have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote collaborative investment in artificial intelligence (AI), signifying a vital advancement in deepening bilateral relations. The signing event, held in Abu Dhabi, was graced by H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, alongside Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, with the esteemed presence of H.H. Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

This partnership is in alignment with Malaysia’s “Madani Artificial Intelligence” (MMAI) initiative, aiming to harness AI and sophisticated data analytics to bolster public safety, enhance national security, and improve operational efficiencies.

As part of the MoU, the UAE and Malaysia will intensify technical collaboration in several crucial domains, which include:

Creating AI-optimized national security systems.

Setting up advanced computing data centers and national security operations hubs.

Boosting customs revenue collection systems.

Streamlining operational efficiencies across multiple industries.

Collaborative Efforts in AI and Technology
The MoU was officially endorsed by Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, UAE Minister of Investment, and Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Malaysia’s Minister of Home Affairs. Conversations during the event were centered on fortifying political and economic relations and investigating the latest breakthroughs in AI and technology to uplift living standards and enhance quality of life.

Economic Alliance and Development
This agreement builds on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in October 2024, showcasing both countries’ joint dedication to cultivating innovation and sustainable growth. Non-oil commerce between the UAE and Malaysia reached $2.5 billion in the initial half of 2024, marking a 7% rise compared to the same timeframe in 2023. Malaysia stands as the UAE’s 12th-largest trading partner in Asia and holds the fifth position among ASEAN nations. Meanwhile, the UAE is Malaysia’s second-largest trading ally in the Arab world, making up 32% of Malaysia’s regional trade.

Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi highlighted the strategic significance of the collaboration:
“Our alliance with Malaysia reaffirms the strength of our bilateral relations and our mutual commitment to fostering technological innovation in support of sustainable development. This MoU represents a considerable advancement toward enhancing collaboration in artificial intelligence and operational efficiency, contributing positively to the welfare of our societies.”

Malaysian Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail commented:
“This collaboration is a vital milestone in propelling Malaysia’s aspirations to emerge as a global frontrunner in AI. By harnessing state-of-the-art AI technologies, we aim to tackle intricate challenges while enhancing operational efficiencies. This partnership underscores the robust relationship between our nations and our collective dedication to innovation and shared advancement.”
